Health Care
Ontario has a universal, publicly-funded health care system, which is available through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

There is a three-month waiting period before OHIP coverage starts for most newcomers, but it is still a good idea to apply for an OHIP card as soon as you get here. To cover the waiting period you should buy private insurance.

If you are a permanent resident, you are allowed to work in Canada and do not have to apply for a work permit.  But if you are just staying temporarily, you will need a temporary work permit. This section tells you what you need to know about getting a temporary work permit.

As a student you are interested in finding a suitable educational institution. Well below are some of the sites that could help find a suitable school, college or university for you.

 School Finder

Ontario has publicly funded school systems throughout the province. Elementary schools provide junior kindergarten and kindergarten programs (for children aged 4 and 5) and programs for grades 1 through 8 (for children from 6-13). 

Secondary schools offer programs from grade 9 through to grade 12. All children between the ages of six and 16 must attend school. 

In this section you can find information about the school system in Ontario and how to enrol your children. You can also learn about English as a Second Language programs for children.
